So you're taking the plunge, and you are going to get engaged, now all you have to do is buy the ring! Probably sounds simpler than it is, as you want everything about that ring to be perfect for the love of your life. Today, we have the convenience of being able to purchase just about everything online if we choose, includingĀ engagement rings. Many of us prefer to do this as we can shop at our own convenience and take as long as we like to browse, and re-browse, from wherever we happen to be.
But, you can't try anything on...
There are various ways you can get a ring size measurement, but some are not as simple as others, especially if you are trying to keep it a surprise from your partner and it's their ring size you need! So once you have decided on the style, metal and type of ring you want, you need to get a measurement to be able to order it. Always check with the online jeweller you are buying from what their return policies are, as this may differ from shop to shop.
Here at Vinny & Charles we offer one free ring resizing as long as it is within 90 days of purchasing (although some styles of ring may incur a resizing charge) and this may take up to 3 weeks so always order your ring well ahead of time (we recommend at least 6 months to avoid any disappointment).
How To Measure Ring Size
One thing to consider when you are trying to get an accurate ring size is the time of day - it is always best to measure your finger at the end of the day when it will be at its largest, otherwise, a ring worn all day every day will get sore and tight by the evening. Also, remember your finger size can fluctuate with temperature, so try to measure in a normal room temperature.
The best way to get an accurate measurement is to pop down to your local jeweller and get them to measure your finger; however, this may not be possible if there are no local jewellers or it is a surprise for your partner. Measuring a ring that is regularly and comfortably worn on the intended finger is easy to do - simply measure in millimetres (mm) the internal diameter (the longest distance) inside the ring from one side to the other. You can then refer to a ring size conversion chart to give you the correct ring size. Ring size conversion charts are available online. However, be aware that global ring sizes are not uniform; Australia and the UK use a letter-based system while the USA and Canada use a numerical system.
Measure the intended finger by cutting a length of string and wrapping it around your finger where you want the ring to sit, and make sure it is comfortable. Then mark the string where the two bits overlap and lay it against a ruler to get the length in mm. You can also download a printable ring sizer chart, which you can print and cut out, then wrap the ring sizer comfortably around your finger, making sure you can still slide it on and off your knuckle. The ring sizer will point to your correct size.
There are also apps available to download that will digitally measure your ring size when you place your finger on the phone screen, and some companies are happy to guess a ring size from a photo if you are trying to keep it a complete surprise and there is no other way of contriving to get an accurate measurement.
What Happens If You Get the Sizing Completely Wrong?
It is easy to make a sizing mistake, so always order your engagement rings with as much time to spare as possible; that way, you can afford the time to correct any mistakes. If you measured with string or cord, this may be stretchy or not give a true feeling of how easily it slides on and off the knuckle. Don't rely on old measurements as sizing may change over time due to weight fluctuations, temperatures or other considerations like broken knuckles or arthritis.
While gold and sterling silver rings can be resized, other metals like titanium or tungsten rings cannot because of the extreme hardness of the metals. Certain designs, like having diamonds or gemstones set around the band, cannot be resized because it would involve removing one or more stones.
Always check with your jeweller about their returns and resizing policies before you buy. If you cannot get an accurate measurement because it is a surprise, then at least choose a design or style that can be altered if necessary.
